A continuation of my previous Mokuhanga print titled “In the Origami Garden,” this piece captures a moment from my experience as a parent. While daytime often found me, as a mother, busy attending to my daughter's needs, nighttime became a quiet space for reflection—when I wished for her to be protected from illness and misfortune.
May the spirits of our ancestors protect her.
May divine beings bless her with a happy and healthy life.
I grew up in Japan, where Shinto and Buddhism coexisted as integral parts of daily life.
When I think of divine beings, I always imagine a fox—an animal often symbolizing a Shinto deity.
The last image shows the daytime version of the origami garden, which I printed a few years ago. Can you see how I used the same plates for both the daytime and nighttime scenes, except for the mother with a stroller and the fox with a baby?
