About Miki

Miki Goerdt LCSW ATR-P

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia, and I am also an art therapist (ATR-P). I earned my bachelor degree in Art and Psychology at Wartburg College, Iowa in 2002 and my master degree in Social Work along with Advance Graduate Certificate in Art Therapy from Marywood University, Pennsylvania, in 2004.
My past work includes treating older adults with mental illnesses, dialysis patients, terminally ill patients, nursing home residents, and adults with serious mental illnesses in an inpatient psychiatric unit. I am also an adjunct faculty for Department of Social Work at George Mason University.
Psychological approaches I use are:
  • Cognitive Behavioral therapy
  • Solution-Focused therapy
  • Strength-perspective theory
  • Reminiscing therapy
  • Mindfulness
  • Motivational-interviewing techniques
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

When I use art therapy, I combine it with some of the above approaches.

I am a member of American Art Therapy Association and International Association of Trauma professionals.

I grew up in Japan and moved to the U.S. when I was a teenager. To give back to the community, I volunteer at Japanese Americans’ Care Fund in Annandale, VA.
